Objectives

The overall objectives of the EGEA study are to study the genetic and environmental factors and their interactions in asthma and asthma-related phenotypes (bronchial hyperresponsivness, atopy), and to clarify the heterogeneity of the disease.

Design

The French cooperative EGEA study includes a case control study and a family study, overall around 2100 subjects.
A first cross-sectional survey took place between 1991 and 1995. The second survey took place between 2003, and 2007. At the end, 2% of the initial population was dead, 92.2% of the initial population still alive had answered to a new short self-completed quesitonnaire and 77.1% to the main questionnaire. At the third survey (2011-2013), 1558 participants filled in their questionnaires (response rate=79.2%).

Population

  • First survey
    • 348 asthmatic cases (adults or children) ascertained in chest clinics (families ascertained by one asthmatic) (Egea "I")
    • 40 familles ascertained by an asthmatic sib pair (Egea "II")
    • 415 controls from the general population
    • first degree relatives of asthmatic probands
    • i.e. in total 2047 sujets
  • Second survey(EGEA 2)
    • Conducted in the initial population (nearly all in adulthood)
    • 58 relatives (from the same families) not examined at the first survey have been examined at the second one
  • Third Survey (EGEA 3)
    • Conducted in the whole study population (participants to EGEA 1 or EGEA 2)
    • By self-completed questionnaire

Usefulness of this research for the society

A better understanding of the relationships between environment, genetics and asthma is important for developing preventive measures and new asthma management. The EGEA study provides public health information with the goal of improving the respiratory health of the population.
